UPDATE: Traffic calms following Sandton shootout

SANDTON - There has been a shootout on the M1 near Grayston Drive.

UPDATE: 19 October 2016, 2pm –  The crime scene on Katherine Street in Sandton is currently being cleared by officials. Traffic is slowly returning to normal in the area.

The suspects are now in police custody.

UPDATE, 19 October 2016, 12pm: According to EMER-G-MED, three suspects have been arrested at the scene and one suspect is still at large.

Max Cohen from EMER-G-MED, said, “At 11:24 this morning EMER-G-MED paramedics responded to reports of a shooting on the M1 North after the Grayston Drive offramp, in Wynberg – north of Johannesburg. Paramedics arrived on the scene to find a large JMPD and SAPS presence.”

SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubela spoke at the crime scene, stating that police intelligence was the driving force behind apprehending these suspects. Listen him from the crime scene below:

He further said, “On-scene reports indicated that the suspects’ vehicle was spotted by police travelling on the highway, after an armed robbery in Rivonia. The suspects opened fire and a shootout ensued. Three suspects were arrested on the scene. Two are still at large. A security officer sustained minor injuries to one of his hands during the commotion, he was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.  Motorists can expect heavy delays in both directions approaching the scene due to ongoing crime scene investigations.”

INITIAL REPORT: 19 October 2016, 11:38am – According to reports from EMER-G-MED, paramedics have responded to a shootout crime scene on the M1 Highway near the Grayston Drive off ramp.

The report stated, “Paramedics are mobile to a shooting incident on the M1 near the Grayston Drive offramp, in Sandton. Motorists are warned to avoid the area and to expect heavy delays.”

At this stage three suspects have been arrested and no serious injuries have been reported.
