Women get tips on savvy health insurance for retirement

JOHANNESBURG – Women urged to ensure they are taken care of during golden years with savvy health insurance.

Insurance broker, Tetiwe Jawuna, is urging women of all ages to consider taking out the right health insurance to cover any illnesses or injuries during their golden years.

Jawuna, head of insurance brokers at Standard bank, explained that this was necessary as the older one got, the more susceptible one becomes to injuries and illnesses.

She mentioned two essential insurance solutions that women of all ages should consider, with the first one being disability cover. “As the name implies, disability cover is designed to protect you in the event that you become totally and permanently disabled,” she explained.

“Different types are available and the money [from the lump sum payout] can be used to provide care in the form of a full-time nurse, for instance, or facilitate movement and comfort by purchasing mobility equipment.”

The second cover Jawuna urged women to consider was that for critical illnesses which pays out a specific amount on the diagnosis of a pre-specified disease. “These included illnesses such as cancer, stroke, heart attack and kidney failure, and while there’s evidence to show that these types of illnesses are genetic and related to lifestyle, they often strike in the senior years when most people need extra financial security,” she said.

Jawuna further stressed that while most people believed that a comprehensive medical aid should be enough to cover the aforementioned diseases, unfortunately, this was not always the case and greater protection needed to be assured.

She concluded by urging women to consider the options before them and prepare for all eventualities ahead. “Besides, the security and peace of mind a comprehensive insurance plan provides, make it a worthwhile investment at any age,” she said.
