Bryanston judo club does well in championships

BRYANSTON – The Tatami Judo Club garners 12 individual medals and 17 team medals at the recent South African Open Judo Championships.

The Tatami Judo Club, which represents the Joburg Judo District, performed well at the recent South African Open Judo Championships held at Carnival City.

The club, under the guidance of Sensei Basil Smith, sent 19 of its qualified judoka to the championships. The club was able to bring home 12 individual medals comprising six gold, three silver and three bronze, as well as 17 team medals.

“The judoka of Tatami Judo Club trained hard for this tournament which certainly showed in the results they achieved. Our team members included jukoka from Beaulieu Preparatory, Bryanston Primary, Japari, Kyalami Preparatory, Fourways High, Bryanston High, St. Stithians and St. Davids,” said Smith.

“Judo is a sport ideal for both boys and girls of all ages. The art enhances the body’s core stability and strength. Footwork and co-ordination are further improved complementing the training necessary for other sporting activities. In addition to physical fitness, Judo is set to boost overall confidence, self-esteem and self-discipline.”

The Tatami Judo Club was started by Smith in 2007 and provides training sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Bryanston Primary School.
