Crawford carries the torch

SANDTON – Crawford celebrates their very own Olympians with running of the torch ceremony.

In honour of Crawford Schools’ very own Crawford Olympians, namely Cameron van der Burgh, Jarred Crous, Michael Meyer, Michelle Weber and Dylan Bosch — all swimmers – Crawford hosted their very own torch relay #CrawfordTrackTheTorch.

This event was held as a warm-up event leading up to the official Olympic torch ceremony on 5 August. The torch for #CrawfordTrackTheTorch was made specifically for this event and was branded with the Crawford Schools logo and the five Olympic rings.

This torch will travel throughout the country and will eventually visit 19 Crawford Schools, where it will finally burn for the duration of the Olympics at Crawford Pretoria. This is to celebrate and create hype and cheer for our South African team, as they continue their journey to gold.

On 25 July, Crawford College Sandton had the privilege of receiving the Crawford Olympic torch from Crawford Italia in Bedfordview via a Crawford-branded helicopter sponsored by Precision Aviation Services. The Crawford Sandton ceremony was opened with young Jack Stephens from Crawford Italia handing the torch to Juliet Meyer (Michael Meyer’s mother).

The ceremony continued with Juliet and a selected number of students (Christian Putter, Grade 12; Dharshana Moodliar, Grade12; Thoriso Banda, Gr.12, and Tylo Cumeberlege, Grade 9) running a relay around the track were they placed the torch at the finish line. Songbird Lil Red (Old Crawfordian) entertained the Sandton Campus with her upbeat hip hop routine.

Meyer was very grateful for all the support the Crawford Sandton Campus has shown. “My son is at the Olympic Village as we speak, I can’t wait to show him all the pictures, he will feel so proud!” said Meyer. Morag Rees, principal of Crawford College Sandton, handed the torch over to Crawford Pre-Primary Sandton on 27 July and they relayed the torch to Crawford Preparatory Sandton from where it will travel to Crawford Village in Rivonia on 28 July.

Crawford College Sandton honours and supports the five ex-Crawfordian Olympians who will be competing in this globally prestigious tournament, namely Michelle Weber, Michael Meyer, Jared Crous, Dylan Bosch and Cameron van der Burgh. #CrawfordTrackTheTorch
