Would-be rapist hit by a guilty conscience, victim tells her tale

ALEX – A victim is shown mercy and escapes a horrific ordeal ...

Candice McLaren Lewis, a Boksburg resident, was hijacked and almost raped in Alex.

After the ordeal, Lewis took to social media to express how the man showed her mercy and decided to only take her cellphone and jewellery, instead of raping her.

She said the incident took place just after midnight when she was headed home from a friend’s birthday party in Centurion. “I was not sure of the directions, so I took an unknown turn-off from the highway and slowed down at a yield sign,” Lewis explained.

“A man jumped in front of my car from a group of about eight people and pointed a firearm at me. He kicked me to the passenger seat, made my seat flat so that I was laying down and drove off with me.”

Lewis alleged that the man put the firearm between her legs. “He kept saying how much fun he was going to have with me.”

The man apparently drove for a while on a gravel road and suddenly came to a stop. “He instructed me to get out of the car and when I came out all I saw were people everywhere and shacks.”

She begged and pleaded with the man not to leave her there and said, “You are my only protection. You know what will happen to me if you leave me here.”

Lewis said the man’s face changed and he suddenly softened up. He apparently told her to get back into the car and they drove off again.

He made another sudden stop, grabbed her bag and stole her cellphone as well as her jewellery. “He threw the car keys at me and directed me out of where we were.

“It’s only when I saw the Alexandra sign [when I was driving out] that I knew where I was.”

Lewis said she didn’t report the incident to the police. She alleged that she had been robbed before and the police could not help her. Lewis added that her jewellery and cellphone were not insured, so she saw no reason to report the incident to the police.

Captain Ali Kodisang, spokesperson for Alexandra Police Station, said the best thing to do in such a case is for the victim to come forward and report the incident. “Give us an opportunity to investigate,” Kodisang added.

“Tomorrow it could be someone else when we could have possibly caught the culprit. Keeping quiet does not help.” He concluded by saying that coming forward also helps the police understand the extent of crime in their area.
