Courage Cup tournament raises funds for cancer

JOBURG – An exciting way for local communities to play a part in raising awareness of cancer.

The inaugural tournament of the Courage Cup, a 5-a-side football tournament, in association with Campaigning for Cancer and Discovery Soccer Park, kicked off in Johannesburg on 25 June.

The tournament will raise funds to assist cancer patients in obtaining the treatment and care they need.

The Courage Cup enables soccer players of both league and social clubs to play their part in raising awareness and funding for cancer.

“Being diagnosed with cancer is very overwhelming for a patient and their loved ones. Campaigning for Cancer’s mission is to be that someone to help you find credible information about your cancer journey, direct you to support services and aid you in ensuring that you are getting the best possible treatment,” said Lauren Pretorius, CEO of Campaigning for Cancer.

“The Courage Cup is a fun and exciting way for local communities to play a part in raising awareness of cancer and also help to raise much-needed funds to provide support and care through the services we offer cancer patients in need.”

Lucas Radebe, the tournament’s ambassador and South African soccer legend said, “A percentage of team registration fees will be donated to Campaigning for Cancer. So not only do you get to have a great time competing, you are also making a contribution to a good cause.

“Cancer is an illness that does not discriminate; I know this from personal experience. It affects South Africans regardless of age, race and gender. Campaigning for Cancer is one of those organisations that rely heavily on fundraising and awareness events such as the Courage Cup to be able to develop and implement programmes that make a difference in people’s lives.”
