Probus hears a different truth

BRYANSTON - Members of Probus learn more about the argument behind global warming in a fascinating talk by Dr Kelvin Kemm.

The Probus group enjoys talks by a variety of interesting people who have all achieved great successes in their chosen field of work, and their last talk was no different.

Dr Kelvin Kemm, CEO of Nuclear Africa gave an interesting talk on environmental issues including global warming and the future of energy production.

He spoke about the controversial subject of global warming and gave evidence to support his claims that humans weren’t behind the warming of the planet. “The arguments that you see in the newspapers now is that the planet has increased in atmospheric temperature by about 0.8 degrees Celsius in the last 120 years,” he said.

“From around 1880 to the early 1900s we actually see a dip in temperatures. The same happened in 1970 where scientists were predicting a global cooling episode. Since 1998 there has actually been very little in terms of temperature increase.”

Kemm is an advocate of nuclear energy and spoke about the benefits of a nuclear-powered South Africa. “South Africa is one of the oldest nuclear countries in the world. We predate Japan and France. There is a lot of public misunderstanding regarding nuclear energy, especially after the meltdown at Fukushima in Japan. Nuclear power is the safest and cheapest in the world, and right now, the Koeberg nuclear reactor in Cape Town provides Eskom’s cheapest electricity.”

Kemm added that he was an environmentalist at heart and that nuclear power was the best thing for our planet’s environment.

The intention of Probus meetings is to provide a forum for retired and semi-retired business people to meet others of similar backgrounds and interests.
