Winter warmer wrap up

SANDTON – Sandton-based volunteers of imagine.nation and FeedSA hand out blankets to underprivileged children in Alex.

The Sandton-based volunteers from imagine.nation, which organised a recent blanket drive, were joined by FeedSA on 31 May to hand out the last of the donated blankets in Alexandra.

The imagine.nation members who attended were Maxine Grey, Mandy Benjamin and Jonathan Muchnick. The volunteers were joined by the directors of FeedSA, Genevieve Nathan and Romi Levenstein.

Benjamin said, “As the cold has set in now in full force, we wrapped up the winter warmer blanket drive by partnering with FeedSA and visited six creches in the Alexandra community that FeedSA supports through their feeding schemes.”

Each of the creches the volunteers visited had an average of 40 to 70 children and there was a total of nine creches in Alexandra that received donated blankets.

“Throughout the imagine.nation winter warmer, the communities in Muldersdrift, Lanseria and Alexandra were visited. The final count was 1 700 blankets for the 2016 Winter Warmer,” explained Benjamin.

She highlighted that this drive would not have been possible without the assistance of charitable community members. “A special thank you to each donor who donated money or blankets to support this drive and help underprivileged children. A special thank you goes out to Fiona’s in Randburg who tirelessly made and packaged the 1 400 blankets for which donations were collected, without them this would not have been possible.”

Grey felt inspired and encouraged by the warm and loving welcomes that she received at each creche and said, “The smile on each and every child’s face makes this all worthwhile.

“For imagine.nation it was great to spend the morning with other young people working to make South Africa’s future brighter. Each person has the ability to change the world in some positive way, and seeing young people in action is exceptionally inspiring,” concluded Benjamin.
