Cubs collect for pups

SANDTON – Bryanston Pack collects cat and dog food for Sandton SPCA

Cubs of the 1st Bryanston Pack collected cat and dog food, and blankets which were donated to the Sandton SPCA.

Their contribution was gratefully received by Monique Louw, a volunteer of Project Feed-a-Dog, which works with the SPCA and many of the other animal welfare organisations in the city.

Louw was invited to a meeting of the Saturday Pack and was pleasantly surprised. “It is encouraging to see young children interested and aware of what is happening in society around them, and also being prepared to get involved in doing something about it,” she said.

The collection was arranged as part of a programme which focused on service. Cubs were tasked with finding out about some of the different organisations that assist those in need within the broader community, and then to identify what they could do to help.

According to Marisa Rakic, a leader at the 1st Bryanston Pack, service to others is a key value on which the Scout movement is based. Cubs of the Friday evening and Saturday morning packs participated in this initiative.

Previous service projects undertaken by the Cubs have included a clean-up along the Braamfontein Spruit near their hall, fundraising for Project Rhino and a visit to a creche in Cosmo City to install shelving and donate books and other learning materials which the Cubs had collected.

The Saturday Pack is a recent development and was started to accommodate those children on the waiting list, as the Friday night Cub Pack was at full capacity. Scouting in South Africa is open to boys and girls and offers an exciting outdoor programme which challenges children to become more self-confident, creative and better citizens of the world. The Cub programme caters for children in the seven to 10 year age group, while Scouts is for those between 11 and 18 years of age.
