Rivonia Recreation Club stands the test of time
RIVONIA – Rivonia Recreation Club has many activities on offer for those seeking to get the blood flowing a bit faster.
Rivonia Recreation Club, situated at 7 Achter Road in Paulshof, was opened in 1954 and the tennis club held its first club championships in 1959.
Originally, the old club premises was in Rivonia proper next to the library (when there was no Rivonia Road). Later, when the big dual carriageway was built in the early 80s, the municipality offered the club their current property, and the City built the clubhouse, the tennis courts and the bowling greens. The Rivonia Club has been nestled next to the Sand River ever since.
Matthew Bayley, secretary of the club, said they had many activities on offer for those seeking to get the blood flowing a bit faster.
“Besides the active bread and butter sports sections of tennis, bowls, gymnastics and table tennis, we also offer karate, krav maga, kendo, Latin dance classes, yoga, and Cocktails and Canvas (a painting and artistic workshop), making the Rivonia Club a true community recreational centre,” said Bayley.
The club offers a fully licensed bar and three different halls varying in size which are hired out on a regular basis for a variety of functions including wedding receptions, parties, bar mitzvahs, business functions and sales conferences etc.
Bayley noted some of the club’s achievements, “The gymnastics club is one of the strongest in the country with kids competing countrywide and some overseas; and the table tennis is relatively new but we are already competing in top leagues around Joburg.”
He added that the club’s tennis section was also one of the strongest in Joburg with the men’s and ladies’ teams competing in the top league for many years.
The club has a membership of about 350.
