Sandton police officer faces rape charge

SANDTON - A police constable stationed at the Sandton Police Station has been accused of raping a 17-year-old in Rabie Ridge on 2 May.

A 34-year-old police constable stationed at the Sandton Police Station stands accused of allegedly raping a 17-year-old in Rabie Ridge on 2 May.

The case is currently being investigated by The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), whose national spokesperson Robbie Raburabu said, “It is alleged that the victim was visiting her mom to babysit her younger brother as her mother was working.”

He added that the off-duty constable, who is believed to be in a relationship with the victim’s mother, then allegedly raped the teenager twice in their rented room in Rabie Ridge.

Following the alleged incident, Ipid investigated the issue further and arrested the suspected who was detained at the Ivory Park Police Station before his first court appearance at the Tembisa Magistrates Court on 3 May.

The suspect, who faces charges of rape and is still in police custody, will appear again on 20 May to make a formal bail application.

Raburabu said that the investigation continues.
