A voice for the animals

SANDTON - Allegedly abused primates rescued from Little Falls Garden Nursery.

The entrance to the North Gauteng High Court was buzzing with animal rights activists from Sandton and all over Johannesburg on 3 May.

These activists were determined to be a voice for primates which were allegedly abused at Little Falls Garden Nursery. The International Primate Rescue organisation were the ones to swoop in and save the animals on 23 April. However, the owners of the primates are now contesting the matter in court.

One of the protesters, who referred to herself as Carrie, was outside the court and has been following the story, assisting wherever she can, explained, “The International Primate Rescue is a sanctuary for abused and mistreated primates from all over the globe. Having seen the primates, I can only pray that they are permitted to remain with this organisation.

“The primates were severely malnourished, dehydrated and in desperate need of veterinary care. They are, thankfully, now in safe hands.”

Carrie said the judge provided the two opposing parties a period in which to try and reach an agreement. Failing which, the case will continue in the High Court on 4 May.

Another animal activist at the court, Sandton resident, Kathy Raffray said she was a big supporter of animal rights and that the condition that the primates were in when they were discovered made her ‘sick to her stomach’. She drove all the way from Sandton to the court in Pretoria as she feels passionate about the primates that were rescued.

Sue Mousley of the rescue organisation said, “We are fighting for the monkeys’ futures. Discussions between the attorneys of the parties involved are in progress. We are fighting strongly for these animals as they deserve a better life.”

The animals are currently undergoing desperately needed medical care and were being given a much-needed balanced diet by the organisation.

The rescue organisation has secured legal representation from Tabacks Attorneys and Corporate Law Advisors in Parktown, Johannesburg. The legal team was not available for comment as they were busy with legal proceedings.
