The City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, Pikitup would like to thank all Johannesburg residents and business owners for their patience and continued support during the five-week long strike which ended on 10 April.
According to Pikitup, around 95 percent of their depot-based workers reported for work on Monday, 11 April and have commenced with their scheduled waste management services which include refuse collection, street sweeping and picking up litter. Pikitup workers will also start the process of cleaning up illegal dumping sites and waste that has been left in public spaces such as on street corners.
Pikitup spokesperson, Jacky Mashapu has given a timeline for the clean-up process. “We anticipate that the recovery plan will take over three weeks to complete since, in most instances, the normal operations may be slowed due to excess waste which has accumulated for five weeks.”
He added that residents should keep putting out their bins and any excess waste in refuse bags on their normal collection days.
Pikitup continues to urge communities across the City of Johannesburg to call their 24-hour hotline should they wish to get involved in clean-up initiatives. Illegal dumping can also be logged on the JRA Find & Fix App which can be downloaded to cellphones for free from the Google Play Store.
