Sandton corporates urged to collaborate with Alexandra businesses

SANDTON - Sandton corporates are called to collaborate with Alexandra businesses. Read up on the story here.

The Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industries is continuing its stellar work in uplifting businesses in the greater Alexandra area – but is calling on big business in the Sandton CBD to elevate the promising minds of the Alexandra residents.

The Wynberg-based chamber was established in 1969 and aims to promote and protect the interests of local business owners in the area while giving them the training and insight into the South African business sector.

Managing director of the chamber, Mxolisi Mngomezulu said, “Our function is ‘advocacy’ and making sure that SMMEs are able to participate in the mainstream economy.”

Mngomezulu added that the primary obstacle for many small, medium and micro-sized enterprises remains the dearth of opportunities for business owners. He said, “We hosted a StartUp Weekend which acted as a boot camp for young entrepreneurs at IDC Sandton and we notice a great deal of young people from the greater Alexandra area with ideas that could be manifested into proper businesses. So I think opportunity is the biggest trouble, I think corporates should take notice.”

Mngomezulu said that corporates in the Sandton CBD should invest and acknowledge the amazing work done by aspiring entrepreneurs in Alexandra. “If you look at the… disparities between Sandton and Alexandra, Sandton has grown exponentially while Alexandra residents have provided labour or have been consumers, and nothing has been coming in terms of SMME development.”
