Cub Scouts celebrate centenary

BRYANSTON - As Cub Scouts from all over the country celebrate the organisation’s centenary year the first Bryanston Pack participated in a weekend camp at Groenkloof Nature Reserve in Pretoria.

Along with over 100 cubs and 36 adult leaders from the Bryanston, Rivertrail, Parkmore and Fourways groupss among others, the youngsters had a fun-filled weekend with various activities on the agenda including archery, target shooting and making and flying polystyrene gliders. The cubs had important lessons on the water cycle and the significance of conserving water.

Spokesperson for the cubs group, Gary Pienaar said, “The trails in the reserve provided the ideal location to demonstrate the basics of orienteering and using a compass, while out for a nature ramble. Cubs also learned how to make their own butter, cooked cupcakes over a fire in Dutch ovens, and then finally decorated them with icing sugar.

“The 10-year-old Cubs were also introduced to various first-aid skills including what to do if an accident victim has stopped breathing, in order to help them complete their first-aid badge.”

Event organiser and leader of the first Rivertrail Cub Pack Brendan Powell said, “Seeing the smiles of personal satisfaction on each of their faces as they completed an activity or mastered a new skill, is one of the joys of being involved in the Scout Movement as an adult leader.”
