Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week rocks Joburg

JOBURG - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Johannesburg 2016, held at Sandton City for the first time in many years, was an absolute stunner at its original venue.

Sandton City’s Nelson Mandela Square was taken over by hordes of models, designers, celebrities, fashionable people and dazzling lights from 10 to 12 March.

Excited fashion-lovers were able to see months of hard work take shape on a number of runways throughout Sandton City and even meet and greet some of their favourite fashion designers and personalities.

With a tent set up in the usually-barren Nelson Mandela Square, it was hard for people to miss out on the fashion extravaganza taking place in the home of South African Fashion.

In association with African Fashion International (AFI), the company who promotes African fashion at fashion shows, the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week displayed some of the most fashion-forward African wear to date.

Some of the designers to have their collections make their way down the fashion runway were Carducci, Khosi Nkosi and Spero Viliotti Couture – among other designing greats – in addition to the runway hopefuls who showcased their lines as a part of the AFI Fasttrack Competition.

The winner of the competition was announced shortly after the judges viewed the final works of the contestants on the runways at fashion week, over the weekend, and the winner was none other than young aspiring designer, Nthabiseng Molefe.

City Buzz attended David Tlale’s show, for which the designer took over an entire parkade level to showcase his new designs. Tlale was the only designer to showcase two different collections during fashion week, one of which was his highly-anticipated line, The Intern.

And if Tlale’s line is anything to go by – and it is – this winter’s clothing stores will be filled with tweed prints, black and mahogany-coloured clothing and loads of ornate details.
