Cubs and Scouts celebrate Founders’ Day

SANDTON - Cubs and Scouts from all over the world celebrated Founders’ Day on 22 February.

Bryanston, Rivertrail, Morningside, Parkmore, Peter Place and Fourways Scout groups participated in the celebrations of the day at a Sunday Parade and District Swimming Gala event.

The day marks the birthday of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting Movement.

Spokesperson for the Bryanston Scouts, Gary Pienaar, said the day was extra special for brothers Jude and Alec Stanley, and sisters Iona and Isla Gibson who were invested into the 1st Bryanston Cub Pack before the commemoration service began.

“Together with all the Cubs, Scouts and adult leaders present, they re-affirmed their ‘promise’, which is a personal commitment to a code of values and behaviour on which the Scout Movement is based,” he explained.

“Members are also encouraged to be of service to their communities, through the practice of a daily ‘good turn’ to others in need.”

The 1st Rivertrail Group were the eventual winners of the gala, followed by 1st Bryanston and 1st Fourways as the runners-up.

Pienaar said this year also marked an important milestone – the centenary of Cubs, the junior section of the Scout Movement. “For the past 100 years children have been exploring, laughing, learning, helping in their communities and enjoying the excitement, fun and adventure that being a Cub offers,” he said.

“A number of special celebratory events will be taking place throughout the year to mark this occasion.”

Scouting in South Africa is open to boys and girls and offers an exciting outdoor programme which challenges children to become more self-confident, creative and better citizens of the world.

The Cub programme caters for children in the seven- to 10-year-old age group, while Scouts is for those between 11 and 18 years of age.
