New security measures in Parkmore

PARKMORE - Parkmore is going through significant changes and many local residents have noticed a number of guard huts and posts being erected for a road closure project which will be in effect from 1 March.

The project has been approved by the Johannesburg Roads Agency and holds a great degree of support from local residents who have acknowledged the benefit of improved security in the area while also being able to enjoy quieter streets during peak-hour traffic.

“This has taken over three years of work by committed volunteers to get the closures to this point and it is an exciting time to see the schemes starting to take off,” said Kate Wardle of the Parkmore Community Association.

“Resident volunteers have tirelessly knocked on doors, collected capital and managed contractors to get the best possible fencing and signage for the suburb. We are pleased that 24/7 Security will provide guarding, meaning that there is a comprehensive security solution across the neighbourhood.”

The road closure will be operated by volunteer-led resident committees who will work as non-profit companies in Parkmore Central and Parkmore Estate. Parkmore Central will implement the road closures from 1 March and the closures will stretch from Mattie Avenue to Marie Avenue with five booms giving access to the area. Parkmore Estate will begin road closures from 1 April and these will run from Marie Avenue to Helena Avenue.

Wardle added, “All other roads in these sections of Parkmore will be gated with gates open at peak times, which are from 6am to 9.30am and from 3pm to 7.30pm on weekdays; and Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. Gates near schools will have special gate openings to facilitate collection times. The rest of the time, access will be through the seven booms.”

The Parkmore Community Association is assisting in the collection of funds to run the scheme and capital funds have also been collected by individual companies from residents.
