Teaching swimming skills to youngsters

SUNNINGHILL- As summer is the season for splashing and dipping and giggles around the pool, it is important for children to learn the skills of swimming.

Wahoo Aquatics Centre in Sunninghill recently held their annual January Swim Clinic where they taught children the necessary swimming skills.

“This year’s swim clinic was very well attended. We had a lot of our youngsters participating and getting ready for the competitive season. The children all learnt new skills as well as brushing up on old skills like dives and turns,” said social media manager of the centre, Tracey Riley.

The clinic ran over six days and the swimmers went under a tough regime of swimming, land training and stroke correction. Physio specialist Jardine Ziada of Barrow Physiotherapy was present to assist the swimmers with their swimming skills.

The clinic included a fun day out at Heia Safari where the swimmers tried their new skills at open water swimming.

“Wahoo keeps on top of the game with video analysis of the children which they get to watch in real time and we are lucky to have internationally competitive swimmers such as Sean Moodley and Kelly Fairon, who are regularly selected for overseas competitions where they represent South Africa,” Riley said.

The swimming centre caters for beginners until they become competitive swimmers. One of the competitive clubs is the Electric Eels run under the guidance of head coach, Lynne Stockton.

“The six days were exhausting for the kids, however, they left with a new passion for the sport and a great camaraderie that was built over six days. All in all, it was a great start to the year for many of our young and promising swimmers,” she said.
