Ward 32 councillor, Bongani Nkomo, said in the event of heavy rain, refuse is washed down the road and collects on Bridge Road in Buccleuch and, as a result, it requires an operation to take place to clear the mess.
“The region and Pikitup are well aware of this issue, however, getting the bridge cleaned is always a tedious and lengthy process,” he added.
“The latest event was reported late December 2015 and nothing has been done. This has left both myself as well as residents frustrated and angry.”
Nkomo explained that flooding on the bridge is the primary and most concerning feature. He said the bridge is one of three entry and exit points into the furthest parts of Buccleuch.
“[The bridge is] a huge danger to motorists with the most notable case being a car that was nearly washed over,” explained Nkomo.
“The occupants escaped via the sunroof when their car failed to cross. I personally witnessed this event.”
He and the existing resident organisations in the area have proposed that the bridge be raised. “This would address both the areas of concern,” he added.
Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for Johannesburg Roads Agency said the agency is aware of the safety concerns of residents during flooding.
“Our planning department has inspected the bridge and is currently preparing a report with recommendations to mitigate the risk of the low-level bridge overtopping during flood conditions,” explained Peters-Scheepers.
“In the interim, we request the community’s assistance to report any overtopping of the bridge to the regional agency depot to secure the area and ensure safe passage for road users.”
