What to expect in your ward in 2016

SANDTON – Ward councillors look forward to the various initiatives and projects that are in store for their wards in the new year.

Ward 102 councillor, David Potter, said 2016 is going to be particularly exciting because it is an election year. “Residents across the city must ensure that they are registered to vote and once registered to vote, actually come out and vote because each vote is important,” said Potter.

Ward 90 councillor, Anthony Still added that the local government elections would be in April or May 2016. “If you are not registered, or registered at a voting district close to a prior residence, then you will get a chance to register or change to a new voting station when the Independent Electoral Commission holds two registration weekends,” he explained.

Still said registration weekends were scheduled for the first weekends of February and March.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp is proud to announce that a stormwater project has been approved in his ward, for Ballyclare Drive in Bryanston. He said there would be resurfacing of parts of the road and the developments would be noticeable in the new year.

“The need to continue to protect and monitor the pollution of our rivers and tributaries in the suburbs is of paramount importance in 2016,” added Earp.

Community members can expect the intersections along Ballyclare Drive, between William Nicol Drive and Outspan Road in Morningside, to be widened next year. “We are appealing for streetlights at the traffic circle next to the Riverside Shopping Centre and we will hopefully also see City Parks providing some security to the Field and Study Park,” said Earp.

He believes the new year comes with endless possibilities. “If all residents can give support to their residents’ associations, road closure committees and join the local sector policing forums, we can really kick off the year on a high,” he added.

Ward 104 councillor, Mike Wood said, “I would like to encourage the community to get more involved in their ward in the new year as this has proved to be hugely beneficial in the past.”

Ward 91 councillor, Andrew Stewart said next year his residents could look forward to park rangers patrolling Innes Free Park and George Lea Park. “This should make a big difference provided it is managed properly,” he added.
