The post office, which has allegedly been closed for weeks now, has left residents frustrated and looking for an explanation.
One resident spoke out on the closure, expressing frustration at the lack of communication from the entity on the matter.
“We’ve had no indication of when, or if, it will re-open, no directions as to what to do, other than a handwritten notice in the window [telling customers] to use the Bryanston West Post Office,” he said.
Cameron MacKenzie, shadow Deputy Minister for Telecommunications and Postal Services, clarified the matter, explaining that the non-payment came as a result of cash flow issues faced by the entity, which allegedly meant creditors were not paid.
“It was confirmed that the [South African] Post Office has not paid rental for several months now and that customers are being redirected to Rivonia Post Office,” he said.
He added that the existing consignments of mail and parcels that are in the post office remained locked up and that residents would not be able to collect them until the landlord opened the premises again.
Khulani Qoma, spokesperson of Sapo, also confirmed the closure of Bryanston Post Office, explaining that the recorded items and parcels at the centre had been redirected to the Bryanston West Post Office.
“Street delivery of mail [will] continue normally in Bryanston, but unfortunately mail addressed to Bryanston postboxes cannot be accessed at this stage. Sapo will have a solution for the Bryanston postboxes within days,” he added.
He also addressed the issue of how long the Bryanston Post Office is expected to remain closed, saying that Sapo was currently engaging the landlord of the premises to address the matter of mail in the old post office and in postboxes that cannot be accessed.
Qoma dodged the question on the reason for the sudden closure, but assured customers that Sapo would inform them once the matter is resolved.
