Site of tragic Grayston bridge collapse cleansed, bridge construction to go ahead
SANDTON - Religious leaders of various denominations, City officials and construction workers came together on Friday 13 November to cleanse the site of the tragic bridge collapse on the M1 highway which took two lives on 14 October.
Metro police and the City of Joburg closed off the M1 highway for 15 minutes, starting at 10 am on 13 November in order for the road, specifically the area where a victim from KwaZulu-Natal succumbed to his injuries and died after being trapped in his vehicle after the collapse.
It has been a month since the tragic incident which shook the Joburg community. At the time Mayor Parks Tau proclaimed that he had never seen a tragedy of this magnitude.
Representatives from construction company Murray and Roberts also attended the ceremony as did MMC Christine Walters and acting Mayor for the City of Joburg, Sello Lemau.
Lemau said that the City held the ceremony as a way to show its citizens that the M1 highway is an accident free zone.
He added that the City is still conducting an investigation into the cause of the collapse and are committed to finding the cause.
Lemau said the City had recognised the importance of having the pedestrian bridge and will commence construction on it shortly.
