Get inked, save a little life
ROSEBANK – The Childhood Cancer Foundation, better known as CHOC, will once again be hosting its annual Tattoo-a-thon fundraiser at an inking parlour near you on 17 October.
The official Tattoo-a-thon ambassador for 2015 is none other than Sebastian Schütte, who visited the CHOC home in Saxonwold with a huge quantity of colourful cupcakes to surprise young cancer warriors.
“I am a cancer survivor myself,” said Schütte, who was diagnosed with the disease at 24 years old. He also happens to be a qualified medical doctor.
“For me, kids are my life. My friends and I founded our own charity called Panda Crew, with our main aim being to help children in need all around the world,” Schütte continued.
“So for me, it’s an honour to be CHOC’s ambassador this year. Because I am a survivor, the foundation is very close to my heart.”
CHOC representative, Sophie Ndlovu, reiterated how grateful the foundation was for this kind of public support.
“Last year, the [tattoo] studios in Johannesburg alone raised more than R100 000 for CHOC,” said Ndlovu with excitement.
The Tattoo-a-thon was established after founder Jordan Gray lost a little friend to cancer. Gray had been financially supporting the youngster at the CHOC Tygerburg Lodge and was so devastated by his loss that he stopped volunteering there for two years. However, an engagement with a personal development course – coupled with his love of tattoos – motivated him to start the annual Tattoo-a-thon. Since its inaugural event in 2012, the Tattoo-a-thon has raised over half a million rand.
Participating is simple – visit the website and click on Book a Tattoo.
Supporters will be able to browse through a list of participating tattoo studios in their city. Once they have chosen a studio they like, they can book a slot through the Quicket link at the bottom of the page. All that is left to be done is turn up on 17 October, get inked and have fun doing it.
