Live jazz billboard in rush hour traffic

SANDTON – Motorists were treated to a live jazz billboard performance on a stage during rush hour traffic on the corner of William Nicol Drive and Republic Road in Sandton.

The live performance marks the start of the countdown to the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz event that will take place over three days in Sandton from 24 to 26 September.

A jazz performance could be enjoyed from the comfort of motorists’ car seats and via a specially opened frequency on the radio which allowed motorists to not only see the performance but to also hear it as the musicians performed on a stage set up in front of a billboard.

The two-hour live gig, which started at 5pm and ended at 7pm, featured some of the best young jazz musicians in South Africa who make up the 2016 Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band and was conducted by celebrated bass guitarist Concord Nkabinde.

“At Talk Radio 702, we are excited to be partnering on such an innovative campaign,” said Primedia Broadcasting sponsorship and promotions manager, Jadi Tillim.

“We hope that the live stream element allows the band on the billboard to reach significant audiences beyond those who are driving past.”

Jenny Pheiffer, head of group sponsorships at Standard Bank added, “The billboard reinforces our campaign idea which is, the closer you are, the more you feel. This drives the fact that music is better when experienced live. The live billboard is a creative way of bringing live music to unexpected places.”

On the Sandton Chronicle Facebook page, Reva Barendse commented that she did not think it was the brightest idea to have a live jazz billboard on one of Sandton’s busiest intersections. “Nice way to congest the traffic even more,” she said.
