VOICES OF SANDTON: ‘I’m just trying to make a living’

SANDTON – Rethabile Lesesa (26) is an informal recycler from Lesotho and he works from George Lea Park in Parkmore.

He is a part of the maligned informal waste sorters operating from the park. “This is my job,” said Lesesa.

“There are no jobs out there for us, so this is what I do to make money.”

Lesesa said every day he made about R20 to R50 from sorting through the mountainous rubbish dump that has been accumulated by the sorters in the area.

He then sells the old newspapers, cardboard boxes and plastic containers he collects.

“I believe I am actually doing a good job cleaning up Sandton,” said Lesesa.

“There is no need for the community to hate me, I’m just trying to make a living.”
