Dancing from Rivonia to New York and Miami

RIVONIA – Dancers from the Bowring Levin School of Dance in Rivonia recently competed in the American Dance Awards Ultimate Dance Challenge in New York and Miami.

The owners of the school, Leanne Bowring and Adi Levin, said their dancers represented South Africa in the nationals.

“This was the Americans’ national competition to find the dancer of the year,” explained Levin.

“We competed against all the winners from over 20 states in America and Canada. They truly were the best of the best.”

The dancers who represented South Africa were Joanne Liebenberg, Stacey Woolnough, Jessica Wostenholm, Caitlin Wostenholm, Amy Stoch and Lucy Williams.

Levin said the dancers all performed solos, duos and group numbers and were placed in the top 10 and received special awards.

“The standard was incredible and we were so excited to see our girls holding their own showing exceptional technique, strength, talent and showmanship,” added Levin.

“It was an amazing experience and one that has left us so inspired. And we will definitely go back in the near future.”

Bowring and Levin have been training dancers from the age of three upwards in contemporary, jazz and tap dancing categories for over 27 years. They have also produced many dancers who have progressed onto dancing professionally.

“In the past, our dancers have qualified to represent South Africa in show dance at the International Dance World Championships in Reisa, Germany and the Jazz and Modern International Dance World Championships in Poland,” explained Levin.

She added that over 32 countries compete at these international events and their dancers have done extremely well over the past years, bringing back bronze, silver and gold medals.

Levin said last year, they decided to enter their dancers in the American Dance Awards regional qualifying rounds which were held in Pretoria in September.

“Three American judges came out to adjudicate and our group dance called Intertwined received five awards among them being the Diamond Choreographic Award for the best choreography from duos through to groups and productions,” said Levin.
