BRYANSTON - FOLLOWING the discovery of the body of a 16-year-old boy hanging from a tree at St Stithians College in Bryanston, the school’s rector, Doctor Tim Nuttall, said the boy was identified as a resident of a house near the college.

Nutall released an official statement and said, “With the approval of John Skelton, the principal of Bryanston High School, I am able to confirm today that the boy was a Grade 10 pupil at that school.”

He said the two schools’ joint appeal to the public is to deal with this matter sensitively and with respect for the family of the deceased who are dealing with the unexpected and devastating trauma of his death in this manner.

“Counselling and support are being provided to the people directly involved,” added Nuttall. He also said staff and pupils of the school had a moment of prayerful silence at the school’s Monday (18 May) chapel service.

Nutall added that the process of investigation is continuing and further details will be released as necessary and appropriate.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of a young life, and our thoughts and prayers are with the boy’s family and friends,” he said.

“I express my appreciation to the St Stithians College staff who have been involved in responding to this tragedy.”

Nuttall said an early-morning walker near the dams on the grounds of the school discovered the body. “Our staff and the police responded quickly, and the body was taken away to the mortuary,” added Nuttall.

This is an ongoing story and more information will be released as it becomes available.
