Man “falsely accused” of Senzo Meyiwa’s murder sues police for R10m

BUCCLEUCH - It was reported the man who was falsely accused of killing former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa in October last year is suing police minister Nathi Nhleko and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for R10 million.

Former Buccleuch resident, Meyiwa, was shot and killed at his girlfriend’s home in Vosloorus, in October last year.

Following the release of a police identikit, Zamokuhle Mbatha was believed to have been linked to the murder and was arrested in November last year. He was released 13 days later and the charges were dropped.

Mbatha is now reportedly suing the police minister for R7.5 million, which includes R5 million for defamation and R2.5 million for unlawful and wrongful arrest, and he is further suing the NPA for R2.5 million.

It was reported that in papers filed in the South Gauteng High Court, Mbatha said the statement made by Lieutenant-General Vinesh Moonoo to the media, where he stated that the police believed the man in their charge, Mbatha, was one of the suspects, intended to defame and injure Mbatha’s reputation.

It was reported that Nhleko’s spokesperson said the police minister would deal with the matter in court. The NPA reportedly confirmed they had received the summons on 17 April.

It was further reported Mbatha’s lawyer had not received a response from the NPA and police minister.
