SPCA Sandton rescue chickens in Hillbrow

HILLBROW - The Sandton SPCA along with metro police have confiscated a number of chickens.

FOLLOWING the incident of dogs wired to a bakkie, the Sandton SPCA along with the Johannesburg Metropolitan police and the Department of health have upped their game and have confiscated a number of chickens on 8 May from a property in Bellevue, Hillbrow.

The SPCA said, “The chickens were being kept in a basement of a building in overcrowded conditions with no food or water. In the same room where they kept the chickens and slaughtered them, there was a braai set up as well as pots of boiling water. People buying from this establishment either had the chickens they bought braaied or boiled onsite. Among the live chickens were dead chickens which were being eaten by the live chickens out of pure starvation.”

The authorities made the decision to remove the chickens off the property and they are now in the care of the SPCA.

The SPCA added, “We would like to thank the JMPD for helping. The chickens are costing us over R350 a day to feed which will greatly impact our already low funds. If anyone is able to assist us with chicken feed or a donation, please do contact us.”
