Blame game about illegal parking of meter taxis

SANDTON - No one seems to know who is responsible for monitoring the illegal parking of meter taxis at the Gautrain station’s drop-off zone in Sandton, which has resulted in a blame game between departments.

This following a complaint from concerned motorist, Susie Burstein, who said the issue improved for a while, but the meter taxis returned and continue to disrupt traffic by parking at the drop-off zone.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp said he had spoken to Metro police a number of times about the issue. However, Wayne Minnaar, Metro police spokesperson, maintains the issue is not something Metro police can handle.

Minnaar said the Gauteng Department of Transport would have to deal with the issue. Octavia Mamabolo from the department redirected the query to Barbara Jensen from Gautrain who has said, “I will need to get info on this from our technical team. However, as far as I know, management of traffic outside our station buildings is the responsibility of the City.”

Ingrid Jensen from Gautrain’s technical team said, “Barbara is correct. The Gautrain has no jurisdiction in the area where the taxis park, it is that of the City.”
