Johannesburg Roads Agency boss quits

JOBURG – FOLLOWING the resignation of Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) managing director Skhumbuzo Macozoma people have reacted to the news differently.

JRA board chairperson Jackie Manche expressed her sincere thanks to Macozoma. Manche said he had made a significant contribution and impact at the agency since September 2012, and that he provided outstanding leadership and vision.

“His sound technical and engineering-based approach to bringing the City’s road-related infrastructure to a world class African standard over the medium term, balanced against the need to accelerate services to disadvantaged communities has been exemplary. During his tenure, the agency has moved to a state of solvency and through his leadership JRA achieved its first-ever clean [unqualified] audit this financial year,” Manche said.

Meanwhile Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor, David Potter, who worked closely with Macozoma said ‘due to insufficient funding and a lack of political will’ to fix an ailing infrastructure had cost the City a brilliant young engineer.

Potter said, “Macozoma was at the forefront of attempting to restore motorists’ faith in the entity which had seen a steep decline in service delivery prior to his arrival.”
Macozoma’s work experience speaks for itself, with him having been part of the 2010 Fifa World Cup Organising Committee South Africa. He served as the chief officer for transport and logistics.

Prior to that he served as the chief director for integrated infrastructure network development at the Department of Transport. Meanwhile, Macozoma stated that his tenure at the agency has been one of pride in serving the residents of the City of Johannesburg.

He said, “I have registered personal successes in this tenure which I will cherish for a long time. I will depart with pride knowing that we have been able to change the fortunes of the agency, improve its reputation, and restore its position within the civil engineering industry.”

The City also acknowledged his resignation and significant contribution to enhancing service delivery and building a strong organisation and wished him well. City manager Trevor Fowler said, “The City, together with the agency board is working on a transitional strategy to ensure the ongoing stability at the agency and that service delivery continues in an uninterrupted fashion.”

Fowler said an acting managing Director will be announced shortly. Macozoma’s last working day is 30 April.
