Matthews’ killer prison transfer bid blocked

JOBURG - The bid to have murder-accused Donovan Moodley, who was convicted for killing student Leigh Matthews, transferred to another prison has been blocked.

This is according to a report by the Saturday Star which stated that Moodley’s application to the court to block attempts by the Department of Correctional Services to have him moved from the Johannesburg Prison to the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria, was successful.

Moodley was found guilty in 2004 of kidnapping and murdering Matthews, a student of the Johannesburg’s Bond University in Bemore. Her body was found in a veld in Walkerville on 21 July of that year after being kidnapped 12 days earlier from the parking lot of the college.

According to the report, Moodley filed an urgent application with the South Gauteng High Court requesting that he be allowed to remain at the Johannesburg Prison so he could write his upcoming exams and complete his studies at the University of South Africa, where he is currently completing his LLB.

Furthermore, Moodley had also expressed concern that if he was moved he would lose the use of his guitar which he said brought him immense joy, solace and comfort.

Rob Matthews, Leigh’s father, commented that with Moodley it was “always about him and never about the victim [and] he shows no remorse”.

He added that Moodley was yet to divulge the identities of those who assisted him in the murder.

Moodley was sentenced to life imprisonment for Matthews’ murder and 15 years for kidnapping the 21-year-old.

He was also sentenced to 10 years for extortion after he extorted money from her father.
