Councillor responds to Marlboro centre saga

MARLBORO - As the Marlboro Sports Centre saga continues, Ward 109 councillor Lillian Kekana has added her voice to the situation.

The ongoing saga involves displaced residents who were evicted from Botlhabela Extension 2 flats and moved to the sports centre. They have been occupying the space for close to a month.

This has caused outrage from the community of Marlboro with residents insisting that they were never informed of the move, and are questioning the use and authorisation of the ill-suited centre as temporary accommodation.

Kekana insisted she was not informed of the move. “I was also taken by surprise when the people were moved there, and despite talking to the Metro police and the local sports department, no one is giving me answers,” she said.

Kekana confirmed that the displaced Alexandra residents were placed there by the city council, and said the MMC for Housing should find a solution to the situation.

“I want the community to know that I’m trying my utmost best to get the situation resolved as soon as possible,” she said.

The City of Johannesburg failed to respond to emails sent by Sandton Chronicle regarding the occupation.
