Bryanston Scouts use tech in treasure hunt

BRYANSTON - Cubs of the 1st Bryanston Scout Group experienced technology on a whole new level when members took part in an exciting Geocaching Rally.

Geocaching is a modern day outdoor treasure hunt using technological devices such as GPS’s, mobile smart phones or other navigational devices to hide and seek containers called ‘geocaches’ or ‘caches’ in an area.

Gary Pienaar, shopper marketing manager at Tiger Brands, explained that the treasure hunt took the Cubs on an exciting hunt through the Bryanston and Fourways areas.

“The adventure began at the Riverside Park where the Cubs visited caches hidden in Bryanston, Paulshof, the Rietfontein Nature Reserve, Lonehill,” he said.

Pienaar added that the hunt ended at the All Saints Anglican Church near Fourways Gardens, where the teams met up for a picnic lunch.

For many of the Cubs this was a new experience and the first time that they had the opportunity to use GPS technology.

Each team was accompanied by parents, who acted as the drivers, and transported them from cache to cache.

The Cub programme caters for boys and girls in the seven to 11 year age group, and provides adventurous outdoor based activities aimed at developing character and self-confidence.
