Irate Cell C customer allegedly spent 61K on banner

JOBURG - As the Cell C banner saga played out in court, information emerged that R61 000 was allegedly paid for the controversial banner.

However, according to reports on Twitter, it was alleged in court that the bank account of the man who commissioned the banner was R5 000 in arrears, according to reports on the saga.

It was reported lawyers for Cell C justified their call for an interdict by saying that the aim was to prevent possible further defamation and highlighted the case was urgent.

Lawyers also argued that the person behind the banner did not have the freedom to disclose other people’s phone numbers, such as that of the franchise manager of the Sandton City branch, which was displayed on the original banner.

It was reported that the defendant’s lawyer highlighted the importance of freedom of speech, saying “you should work on the assumption that you should not interfere with the right to freedom of speech.

The defendant’s lawyer reportedly said, “The publication of the banner is not unlawful; it expresses fair comment.”

Judgement for the application to have the banner removed has been reserved for 13 November at 2pm at the South Gauteng High Court.

Earlier in the day on 12 November, the banner was modified. To read more on this, click here
