Miss South Africa launches cancer awareness campaign

SANDTON - In commemoration of breast cancer month, Miss South Africa 2014, Rolene Strauss, launched a breast cancer awareness campaign aimed at supporting those affected.

Strauss, also a medical student, launched the campaign at Sandton City and unveiled a giant wire exhibit as a show of support.

Peter Feldman, of Nine Squared, explained the reason behind Strauss getting involved in the fight against cancer and launching this campaign.

“It is hoped this will draw attention to the issues surrounding breast cancer and shoppers will be asked to support the cause by tying a pink ribbon to the exhibit,” he said.

Feldman added that Strauss was motivated by her passion for health issues, stressing that citizens had a right to be healthy, but also a responsibility to maintain that health.

Strauss added that early detection was important as it greatly reduced women’s chances of acquiring it.

“As a young woman who is passionate about health and women, I feel by creating awareness around breast cancer, I am putting the ball back in the women’s court,” she said.

She also encouraged women to educate themselves about breast cancer and go for regular check-ups, as the disease not only affects woman, but their entire family.

The launch took place on 16 October and the campaign exhibit will be on view outside the Stuttafords store at the mall until 29 October. Members of the public will be able to tie a pink ribbon on it to show support.
