Athol resident angry over illegal signage

ATHOL - Resident Barry Jackson has expressed his disgust over the vulgar "penis enlargement" signs plastered on walls and lampposts in the area and proposes a plan.

Jackson said, “It is extremely ugly and extremely embarrassing to be confronted by ‘penis enlargements’ throughout Sandton and Johannesburg. Can you imagine a mother driving her children to school and being asked to explain what the poster is about?”

He said that more should be done to stop illegal adverts from being plastered all over Sandton.

Jackson proposed that the municipal bylaws for defacing municipal property should be strengthened by increasing fines, enabling the prosecution of anyone offering a service that is advertised by such posters, and requiring any guilty persons to do community service and remove all the posters.

Ward 91 councillor, Andrew Stewart, said he has received numerous complaints from residents regarding the illegal posters, and has spoken to Metro police in the past to inquire about their strategy to combat the problem which he has described as an ‘eyesore for residents’.

He said, “The Metro police have said that they have made arrests in the CBD area and are still working on the Sandton area.”

He said that he comes across approximately 30 different posters while driving, and believes that they are being handed out by a small group of people who should be easy to arrest.

Spokesperson for the Metro police Wayne Minnaar said, “Officers have intensified the enforcement of the bylaw that prohibits illegal signage.”

He said that they have reached the Birnam area and has confirmed that one person has received 10 fines due to illegal posters.
