Displaced people on Hilson River reportedly kicked out

The Hilson River that separates Abbotsford and Highlands North has over the years been occupied by displaced people.

Recyclers on Hilson River have reportedly been removed. This is according to Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo Lead Park Wardens officer Sizwe Mabuza on June 26.

The Hilson River which separates Highlands North and Abbotsford had become a home for some recyclers. Resident Anita Bonnette complained on June 19 that, ‘there are recyclers by the water office that have now moved into the fenced-off park and are living by the river. These guys were dumping unwanted trash into the stormwater drain and river early last year and it seems that they are back doing the same thing.’

Mabuza said Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo’s Park Rangers were on site on June 24 and found displaced persons outside the park.

“Two displaced persons, two sleeping places and a recycling bag were found inside the park next to the stream. Sleeping places were removed and the displaced were told to leave and they complied.”
