KFC partners with SA’s big artists to collaborate on its unique birthday anthem

JOBURG – The lyrics express the profound sense of enjoyment generated by the team submissions of being together, of having a place to call home, of growth and acceptance, and of belonging to a family.

In time for the Ke Dezemba vibes, KFC has launched their bespoke birthday anthem collaboration, Masonwabe, produced by Zakes Bantwini, with vocals by Mafikizolo, and the song itself was created by and for KFC team members nationwide.

KFC asked its 35 000 plus team members across SA to share their inspirations about what KFC meant to them, and hundreds of entries flooded in.

The songwriters, Zakes Bantwini and Theo Kgosinkwe of Mafikizolo used the lyric submissions from more than 970 KFC restaurants in the country to compile the lyrics for the song Masonwabe which means let us be happy.

The lyrics express the profound sense of enjoyment generated by the team submissions of being together, of having a place to call home, of growth and acceptance, and of belonging to a family.

Bantwini said KFC had been a part of Mzansi family celebrations for decades, bringing hope and happiness to the table for so many people.

“To have been a part of their big 50th celebrations has been a career milestone for me, and I am proud to have worked on this iconic partnership. I dream of this song being sung in homes and sports stadiums across SA,” said Bantwini.

KFC also asked team members to audition for a chance to appear alongside the popular artists in the official music video to reflect the team’s passions.

Teams from across the country submitted audition videos as they demonstrated that serving Finger-Lickin’ Good KFC meals was certainly not their only skill. To bring the Feel-Good KFC passion to the music video, 10 of KFC’s All-Star Performers were selected.

KFC marketing director Suhayl Limbada said, “Turning 50 in South Africa means so much to us at KFC, but more than anything, it’s an opportunity for KFC to thank those who have made the iconic brand what it is today; our team members who have helped serve up our ‘Finger Lickin’ Good’ Original Recipe meals for over five decades.”

As an ode to the KFC team members, Masonwabe was launched in December to the entire team, and now, KFC wants to share the track with the entire country.
