​Jab numbers are increasing at City of Joburg’s non-medical sites​

As of July 26, 121 310 people have been vaccinated at the City of Johannesburg’s 26 non-medical sites (NMS). This figure represents the total number vaccinations when NMS were opened on May 26.

 

In a statement by the City of Joburg‘s Virgil James, the most number of people vaccinated were over 60 years (78 283), over 50 years (23 258), educators (17 838), and healthcare workers (1 891). On average, NMS vaccinate between 120 and 230 people a day.

 

“Some regions are seeing greater numbers since the 35 to 49 age group become eligible. The queues have become longer but once people are processed at the different stations leading to the jab, it is very quick. The City is working hard to achieve 67% herd immunity. The Health Department will be undertaking a massive marketing drive to get as many people as possible within the designated age groups to register,” said James.

 

James added that this would include educating and dispelling fake news around the jab. NMS were set up to make it easier and more accessible for residents to get the jab by simply walking or driving a short distance. This has been extended to include two drive-through sites, one in Pimville at Grace Bible Church in Soweto and Houghton Masjid in West Street.

 

The two-jab Pfizer vaccine is being administered at all the NMS. Those who have been inoculated have to return after 42 days, while the Johnson & Johnson is one jab.

 

“The City continues to encourage residents to register as soon as possible or simply walk in. The vaccine is safe and it is normal to experience headaches, nausea or pain afterwards. People are being cautioned, however, not to take the jab if they have Covid-19, influenza or generally feeling unwell. They are also urged to be absolutely honest and disclose any underlying conditions.”

 

As from September 1, people aged 18 to 35 years will be able to register.

 

To receive the vaccine you need to pre-register on an online registration system known as the Electronic Vaccine Data System (EVDS), which is available here and follow the registration steps.

You need the following to register:

• Access to the internet on any device (cellphone, laptop, table, desktop)
• Your ID number or passport, (foreigners) asylum certificate
• Your residential address
• ​Your cellphone number.

Those who do not have access to the internet or mobile device can pre-register at their local clinics and vaccination sites. Those who are immobile will be assisted to register by community healthcare workers at their homes.
