Popular off season Soweto derby now at Orlando Stadium

JOBURG – Change of the venue of the game and its kick-off time is meant to accommodate the Lion Series against the Boks.

There is both a new venue and match date for the Soweto derby of the off-season Carling Black Label Cup.

Instead of the 31 July and FNB Stadium as the date of the game and venue, the popular derby has now been moved to 1 August and will be played at the iconic Orlando Stadium in Orlando East, Soweto.

This is so as to make way for the hosting of the touring British and Irish Lions series in their match against the Springboks which is scheduled to take place on 31 July at the FNB Stadium.

Soweto sports fans will be in for a treat this winter as two major sporting events are scheduled to take place in the historic township located in the heart of the City of Gold.

Carling Black Label, alongside the two Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates as well as Stadium Management, has taken the decision to move the ‘Beer Cup’, as the Carling Black Label Cup is popularly known to fans, to the Orlando Stadium.

This will be a very first for the Carling Black Label Cup since its inception in 2011 that it is held at a venue other than the FNB Stadium.

“Having played at the famous calabash for the past decade, the stakeholders saw an opportunity to commemorate its success through the years by hosting the match at a venue that is a stone’s throw away from where both teams originate,” said Carling Black Label brand director, Arné Rust.

The venue change will see stablemate, Castle Lager host the British Irish Lions series match between the Springboks and the British and Irish Lions on 31 July while the Soweto derby ‘Beer Cup’ match moves to 1 August for a 5pm kick-off.

Thus, ensuring South Africans will be rewarded with an action-packed weekend of the best sporting entertainment, Rust added.
