All-new Toyota GR 86 debuts with significant changes
The new Toyota GR 86 will likely reach our shores before the end of the year or early 2022.
The folks at Toyota have debuted their all-new GR 86 sports car that is the third global model in TGR’s GR series of sports cars.
Unveiled at an online event held together with Subaru, the GR 86 was initially launched in 2012 and more than 200 000 86s have been sold worldwide.
The new GR 86 has been developed jointly with the Subaru BRZ and both models share the same base.
On the inside, the new Toyota GR 86 is fitted with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster as well as an 8-inch infotainment system. There is also seat upholstery and GR badging on the steering wheel plus Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.
The exterior comes fitted with a tweaked front grille that has been borrowed from the GR Yaris, LED headlights plus an aggressive front end.
Speaking of dimensions, the GR 86 is 4 265 mm long, 1 775 mm wide, 1 310 mm tall as well as a wheelbase that measures 2 575 mm.
Powering the sports car is a bigger 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated engine that replaces the 2.0-litre n/a motor that powers the outgoing model. The 2.4-litre engine churns out 173 kW and 250 Nm of torque and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic.
Toyota says it can hurtle from a standstill to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds – 1.1 seconds quicker than the predecessor, thanks to the upgraded engine.
According to Toyota, the engine responsiveness has also been enhanced, providing smooth, stress-free sensations from low to high rpms.
