SAXONWOLD – The Johannesburg Zoo celebrates its 117th birthday this month.

MMC for Community Development Margaret Arnolds said, “With the Covid restrictions regulated to Level 1, what better way to spend your birthday outdoors with family and friends. The zoo offers ample space for picnics and safe walking distancing and boasts over 320 animal species with a total of approximately 2 000 animals.”

The zoo opened in 1904 with a mere 200 acre stretch of land and an animal collection of no more than 10 species, 117 years later, the zoo has grown to 55 hectares in size.

March babies will need to present a proof of identification in order to obtain free access.

“The Joburg Zoo complies with all Covid regulations and it is compulsory for all visitors to wear their masks, practice safe distancing and sanitise at all times,” said Arnolds.
