Brescia’s gift of love

The tree is set to remain the hospital for the remainder of the year in an effort to bring joy, love and special blessing to all who pass by.

In the spirit of community Brescia House School recently shared the Christmas spirit with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Parktown.

The girls’ school in Bryanston gifted the children’s hospital with a Christmas tree that was entirely handmade by a group of Brescia House parents, grandmothers, aunts, alumnae, learners and staff over a four-month period last year.

According to head of marketing and admissions Helga Bishop, the objective of the tree was to promote community spirit and showcase teamwork in action. “Every stitch knitted, crocheted or sewn, every rod welded together, or rope tied, helped create a uniquely South African Christmas tree that once seen, is not easily forgotten. It gets lit up from the inside at night and spreads a gentle glow,” she said.

Bishop added the tree has brought a sense of joy and feeling of love to the children at the school and at the hospital.

“One seven-year-old said that she could feel love coming off the tree into her as she stared at it. A 10-year-old said that he was going to sit looking at it for half an hour, so he could start off his day feeling warm and loved.

“Yet another little girl said she could see that those who made it all understood the most important criteria about teamwork, working together for a common goal – Mandela’s message to us all.”

The tree is set to remain the hospital for the remainder of the year in an effort to bring joy, love and special blessing to all who pass by.
