Grammy nominated tenor Lawrence Brownlee teams up with South African sopranos

BRAAMFONTEIN – The series aims to provide a platform for South African operatic talent living abroad to perform at home.

The MTN Business Opera Jewels gala concert is expected to be held on 4 April at the Wits Great Hall with American tenor Lawrence Brownlee.

According to the organisers, this is the first time since its inception five years ago that the concert will feature an international soloist and marks an important milestone in the event’s history.

Brownlee will share the stage with Bongiwe Nakani as well as Palesa Malieloa, both South African artists. The series aims to provide a platform for South African operatic talent living abroad to perform at home. In turn, South African audiences have an opportunity to experience these jewels as they continue to make their mark on the international opera scene.

Ma-Setlogelo Masote of Web Maestro, believes that the MTN Business Opera Jewels has grown into the best opera gala concert in South Africa and is now easily able to attract artists of the stature of Lawrence Brownlee. “Our offering has grown in so many ways as is attested to by our continued partnership with MTN Business,” she said.

Kholo Magagane, head of marketing at MTN Business shared the same sentiments, said they are proud to have partnered with Opera Jewels as organisations that are proudly South African born brands that have put the country on the map. “From the onset, Opera Jewels has promoted South African opera singers and positioned them to be a force to be reckoned with in a fiercely competitive industry,” Magagane said.

“We remain committed to ensure this partnership is a seamless one that helps to maintain sustainable growth and development within the arts.”

Malieloa is currently finishing her last semester of her master’s studies and will be performing the role of Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, which premiers in Cologne immediately after this Johannesburg performance. Thereafter, she will sing the role of the French woman in Death in Venice by Benjamin Britten, with Theatre Bonn for the 2020 season. In June 2020, she will be in an Opera production with Theatre Aachen, called Ombre felice.

Johannesburg opera lovers will get a one-night-only opportunity to experience the MTN Business Opera Jewels on 4 April at the Wits Great Hall.
