Bongani shakes up and combines two music genres in his new album

ALEXANDRA – Bongani Zuma describes his latest album as a combination of Maskandi and Umbhaqanga.

Umbhaqanga and Maskandi music artist, songwriter and guitarist Bongani Zuma, has released his sixth full music album titled Intandane with 10 tracks.

Zuma has been in the music industry for more than three decades. He was born and raised in a musical family in Howick, Midlands in KwaZulu-Natal. He was inspired by his neighbour, the late David Masondo one of the founders of The Soul Brothers music group in the early 80’s.

“I grew up in a musical family with my elder brother Mazambane Zuma being a professional artist. I also had a privilege to have a successful music artist in the land, David Masondo, as my neighbour. In 1985 I worked with a local Mbhaqanga music group and left the group when I moved to Johannesburg in 1989,” he said.

When he came to Johannesburg, Zuma worked with a number of music groups as an instrument player and only released his first album in 1998.

He described his latest album as a combination of Maskandi and Umbhaqanga music genres which brings a unique taste in traditional music. “I wanted to bring something new in the traditional music, especially in Maskandi and Umbhaqanga music genres. We barely find artists who can combine the two genres. This album is an evidence that it is possible to combine the two to accommodate both fans of the two genres.”

The father of two has lived in Alexandra for the past 34 years and said being in the music industry for decades has taught him to accept and adapt to change. “Things are changing every day in the music industry and that has taught me to move with times. The instruments and the ways in which music is distributed through new technology has pushed me to come out of my comfort zone.”

His music can be downloaded from different online music platforms and is also available on iTunes.
