Johannesburg comic book authors partner to launch own work

HIGHLANDS NORTH – The books on sale will encompass a large spectrum, ranging from picture books for children to young adult books.

Local comic and thriller books authors, Richard Edwards and John West, will soon showcase their latest work to the public and all book lovers are invited.

Edwards, a resident of Highlands North, said the book fair was organised after the two authors met at a recent event in Johannesburg. After their meeting, the pair decided they should partner and organise their own to showcase their work.

Edwards is the author of The Puzzle Train as reported in the North Eastern Tribune article All aboard the puzzle train [Week ending 21 December 2018].

“We have been working together to help promote and encourage each other and several other authors we have also met,” said Edwards.

“We started promoting our books online via social media but wanted to take our books to the public directly. We have attended several other general craft fairs and markets to try and sell our books but decided that a dedicated book fair would be a better platform for us and other authors to promote their books.”

He said they currently have 14 confirmed authors who are expected to take part. The books on sale will encompass a large spectrum, ranging from picture books for children, through to young adult, sci-fi and horror as well as finance, business and short stories.

The fair is free and everyone is welcome to attend. The organisers added that the authors will also be more than happy to discuss their books.

Edwards added, “We’re hoping that through our mix of genres, we will attract a large and varied crowd of book lovers.

“Being in a comic book store, we’re also hoping to attract some of their regular patrons to come and browse through our selection.”

Edwards said they hope that there will be more book fairs in the future. According to The Puzzle Train author, a number of independent authors are looking for a place where they can sell their books and interact with their readers.

Some of the benefits of this fair are that the attendees will have access to books that are not available in mainstream book stores, they will be able to meet the authors and have their books signed.

Edwards will also be giving away a three-chapter sample to the sequel to The Puzzle Train, Puzzle Island.

The book fair will be held at Cosmic Comics on Beyers Naudé Drive in Blackheath in Johannesburg on 24 August.
