The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) is pleased to announce details of its exciting 2019 Early Spring Season.
This runs at the Linder Auditorium in Parktown between 21 August and 13 September according to the organisers.
One of four programmes will be presented each week during the season, with Wednesday evening performances reprised each Thursday and Friday during the first and last week of the season and on Thursdays during the second and third week.
The season will be presented as part of the famed World Symphony Series (WSS), which was launched in Durban 23 years ago and introduced to JPO audiences in 2017.
“By introducing our distinguished roster of acclaimed conductors and soloists on our concert platform we are delighted to continue with the third leg of our 2019 World Symphony Series, fulfilling the JPO’s broad mission of realising our dynamic artistic vision,” said Bongani Tembe, joint chief executive and artistic director of the Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestras.
“As ever, while offering a high level of live music-making on our concert platform, our priority remains equally focused on developing our community engagement programmes. Through promoting the transfer of skills to young musicians of all races on the local scene, the JPO is committed to enriching the cultural life of all South Africa’s citizens.
“We look forward to welcoming our audiences which congregate at the Linder to enjoy the banquet of top-flight performances given by our guest artists in collaboration with our resident musicians.”
Debora Waldman, the fine young Brazilian-Israeli conductor, will be on the podium for the opening programme of concert favourites on 21, 22 and 23 August.
This sees the 21-year-old Russian virtuoso, Daniel Kharitonov, taking centre stage as soloist in Liszt’s dazzling Piano Concerto No. 1, flanked by Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien and Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D minor.
The distinguished Russian conductor, Daniel Raiskin, returns to lead the performances on 28 and 29 August.
His programme will feature Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Max Bruch’s thrilling G minor Violin Concerto which will be (played by the admired young Chinese soloist Susanne Hou) and Brahms’s First Symphony.
Conductor Lykele Temmingh and solo pianist Megan-Geoffrey Prince fill the JPO’s guest slots on 4 and 5 September in a programme featuring Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri Overture, Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor and Franz Schubert’s Fifth Symphony.
Daniel Boico, the brilliant Israeli-American maestro, returns for the final concerts of the season on 11, 12 and 13 September.
He will conduct a highly popular programme comprising Smetana’s celebrated tone poem The Moldau, two masterworks for cello and orchestra, Gabriel Fauré’s Élégie and Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, both played by Gary Hoffman, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 in C minor.
