Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra to usher in spring in style

PARKTOWN – Performances will take place at the Linder Auditorium from 21 August to 13 September.

Fans of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) can look forward to an Early Spring Season of performances at the Linder Auditorium in Parktown from 21 August to 13 September.

The season will be presented as part of the famed World Symphony Series, which was launched in Dublin 23 years ago and introduced to JPO audiences in 2017.

Joint executive and artistic director of the Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestras, Bongani Tembe said, “By introducing our distinguished roster of acclaimed conductors and soloists on our concert platform, we are delighted to continue with the third leg of our 2019 World Symphony Series, fulfilling JPO’s broad mission of realising our dynamic artistic vision.”

While offering a high level of live music-making on the concert programme, Tembe said JPO’s priority remained equally focused on developing community engagement programmes.

“Through promoting the transfer of skills to young musicians of all races on the local scene, the JPO is committed to enriching the cultural life of all South African citizens.

“We look forward to welcoming our audiences who congregate at the Linder to enjoy the banquet of top flight performances given by our guest artists in collaboration with our residential musicians.”

Brazilian-Israeli conductor Debora Waldman will be on the podium for the opening programme from 21 to 23 August. Young Russian virtuoso Daniel Kharitonov will take centre stage as soloist in Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.1, flanked by Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien and Cesar Franck’s Symphony in D minor.

Israeli-American maestro Daniel Boico will return for the final concerts of the season from 11 to 13 September. He will conduct a popular programme comprising Smetana’s celebrated tone poem The Moldau, Two Masterworks for cello and orchestra, Gabriel Fauré’s Élégie and Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, both played by Gary Hoffman, and Tchaikovsky’s Sympony No.2 in C minor.
